Why Fly Fishing for Trout

Trout eat bugs. Yes, they like minnows, worms and other meaty morsels but trout are opportunistic feeders and bugs offer the most opportunity. Bugs are very lightweight, in most cases, weighing less than a fraction of a gram. This is why we use a fly rod and do what we do.
With other types of fishing gear like spin or bait casting it is the weight of the lure that bends the rod, pulls the thinly diameter fishing line off the reel, through the guides, and to the target. When using virtually weightless bits of feather wrapped on a hook, we need something else to propel it. The fly line provides the necessary weight to make it work.
