Subject: Westmoreland County Sportsmen’s Help Needed on PA HB1576
I want to share with you some information about an important legislative issue that will affect sportsmen and women throughout Pennsylvania and am hoping the members of your club will join Trout Unlimited in contacting state legislators to voice our opposition to a bill currently moving through the House of Representatives.
It is very likely that the Pennsylvania House of Representatives will vote the week of Nov. 18 on HB 1576, the Endangered Species Coordination Act. This bill severely affect the way in which the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission (PFBC) evaluates and designates Class A wild trout waters and, along with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, lists threatened and endangered species.
Specifically, House Bill 1576 bill would require the PFBC to undergo a formal rule-making process and review by Independent Regulatory Review Commission, in order to designate a stream as a Class A Wild Trout water. By doing so, this bill would delay much needed protections for vulnerable wild trout streams and politicize the current scientific, technical and transparent listing process—allowing special interests to drive the process, rather than science.
Additionally, the Fish and Boat Commission and the Pennsylvania Game Commission would have to undertake a similar process in order to list and delist threatened and endangered species in the state.
Please contact your Representative this week and tell him that House Bill 1576 is bad for Pennsylvania sportsmen and women, and it will remove important protections for the commonwealth’s fish and wildlife. To learn more about the House Bill 1576, please check out the PATU website.
